PVC Pipes Emerge as Top Performer in Utah State University’s Extensive Water Main Break Analysis

PVC 2024 is back as an in-person event, promising key insights for the PVC piping value chain.

As a key sector of the European PVC industry, pipes are in the spotligt at the upcoming PVC 2024 Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. PVC4Pipes is sponsoring two papers that each contribute to the knowledge base on importance for the future, namely hydrogen and durability:

PVC Pipes Readiness for the Hydrogen Economy
Sjoerd Jansma from Kiwa Technology will present a paper that delves into the significant potential of clean hydrogen as a versatile resource across various sectors, including industry, transport, energy, and buildings. Highlighting the European Commission’s Hydrogen Strategy, it underscores the potential adaptability of the existing natural gas grid for hydrogen transport, with a special focus on PVC's role within this framework.

The Netherlands, with its extensive network of over 80,000 km of PVC pipes, serves as a prime example of PVC's long-standing preference for low-pressure gas distribution. Drawing on two decades of evidence, the paper asserts the suitability of PVC pipes for the safe conveyance of hydrogen gas. Kiwa conducted a detailed study for Netbeheer Nederland and PVC4Pipes, assessing the mechanical integrity and permeation behavior of PVC-U, PVC-Hi and PVC-O pipes and joints in hydrogen transport.

Securing a 100+ Year Design Lifetime for PVC-U Pressure Pipes Through Optimized Extrusion and QC Testing Conditions
Joaquin Lahoz, CEIS, will deliver a presentation focusing on the durability of PVC-U pressure pipes. This research, commenced in 2020 by CEIS in collaboration with PVC4Pipes, seeks to establish the consistent production of Ca/Zn stabilised PVC-U pipes with a design lifetime of over 100 years. The study meticulously examines the correlation between processing conditions of the pipes, their design lifetime and the refinement of Quality Control (QC) testing to ensure reliability across various QC methods as per the ISO 1452-2 standard. This investigation is pivotal for the advancement of long-lasting infrastructure solutions.
