At the end of their life (or when the building they are used in is being renovated), PVC pipes can be collected and easily recycled and used in new products. Not only can PVC piping systems be recycled and reused but studies have shown that their key properties remain intact through several re-use cycles, very much like the re-use cycle of paper. At the present time the quantities of pipes being recycled are small (~ 60,000 tonnes in 2011), because most of the pipes are still being used in service. Nevertheless, the technology is in place and is being used for the recycling of PVC piping systems.
